People skills are probably the most under developed of all skills in our day to day lives, yet they are central to becoming a champion in network marketing. I’ve worked for many companies who’s leadership structure treated you like furniture, and they could get away with that because their paycheck wasn’t directly affected by someone’s hurt feelings. In network marketing, the #2 reason why people quit, behind not making money, is hurt feelings. Your capacity to LEAD PEOPLE and MANAGE THINGS is more than vital, it’s everything.
I worked with a guy who came from corporate America in a particular network marketing opportunity. He actually had an office on Wall Street, and ran a company that did $20 million dollars a year, of which his personal salary was over $500,000. He came to network marketing like most of us in the form of a phone call from a friend. He decided to get involved and tried to run his network marketing business like a Wall Street company. I tried to warn him on several occasions that being abrupt, stern, short tempered, and impatient would cause his business to dry up faster than a drop of water hitting a hot frying pan. He didn’t believe me at the time – but now he does. I watched his meetings dwindle down to nothing; I listened as his downline would complain privately about his approach. It was sad, but I could see it coming a mile away. The last I heard, he has totally discontinued having meetings, and I assume that things aren’t really good for him.
You can’t afford the luxury of being a jerk and expect to have a successful network marketing business. As a matter of fact, this is the ONLY industry that will force you to make some changes to your personality and behavior if you plan on succeeding. In my mind, this makes network marketing one of the most valuable tools for personal growth around, and there are plenty of people who will tell you that, had it not been for network marketing, they would not be married, or gotten promoted on the job, or had a quality relationship with their children. If you can successfully serve your people with the right heart and attitude, and lead by example in the form of moving forward and succeeding, you’ll soon be able to live the dream that network marketing offers. Take your personal development seriously and watch it transform your entire life.
