Are You Having Trouble Understanding Attraction Marketing?

by The Stonecold Millionaire on July 14, 2010

In the last 48 hours I’ve spoken to a few people who have purchased Magnetic Sponsoring and have attempted to apply it to the “real world” but confess that they just don’t get it. That’s really interesting to me because in my estimation it’s a simple concept. So, what do you say to someone who says that they can’t seem to get the whole attraction marketing thing to work? Well, here’s how I explain it…

Let’s say that you just purchased a brand new home in an unfamiliar neighborhood. While unloading your U-Haul, you notice a guy coming from one of the homes across the street. Upon reaching you, he introduces himself as “Bob.” After a bit of small talk, Bob welcomes you to the neighborhood and passes to you a housewarming gift – a box of gardening tools. You accept this pleasant gesture, shake hands and Bob leaves.

About a week later, you are in your front lawn trying to figure out how to remove the brown patches that exist from the poor care of the previous owner. You look up and notice Bob watering what looks like a miniature golf course. His landscape is immaculate. He asks you about your lawn and what you’re doing to get it to look better. You give a hopeless response because your knowledge base is weak in this area, but Bob pipes up and says that he has a brochure in his garage: “10 Ways To Resurrect Any Lawn From The Dead In 30 Days Or Less.” He offers the brochure, you accept, and that’s it. Three weeks later, your lawn looks better than ever.

From time to time you notice that Bob is always throwing out a wonderful “secret” or “master tip” on something related to landscaping, and you’ve also witnessed some of your neighbors visiting Bob to inquire about various landscaping subjects. This causes you to register Bob as the “resident expert on landscaping” in the back of your mind.

The time comes when you can no longer take care of your own lawn, and you decide to hire a professional service. However, since you’re new to the area you become discouraged because you don’t know of any reputable companies. That’s when your sub-conscious says, “ask Bob.” Of course! He’s the neighborhood expert.

So, for the first time you find yourself doing what you’ve seen many of your neighbors do and wander across the street to Bob’s house hoping for a good referral.

“Bob, I’m looking for a quality lawn care company to handle the upkeep of my landscape, and I was hoping that you could give me a good referral.” Bob smiles at you and says, “Sure.” Walking to his desk, he reaches down, picks up a business card and hands it to you.

What do you think in on that business card? To your shock and amazement, the card reads, “Bob’s Landscaping.”

Do you see what has happened here? Bob has been practicing attraction marketing from day one:
-The housewarming gift
-The brochure
-The tips and advice
-The assistance of your neighbors

Bob has embodied the principles as outlined in Magnetic Sponsoring and he isn’t even a network marketer! The principle of attraction marketing is giving genuine value to a qualified group of people over a period of time. When you can anchor your value in your “neighborhood” (i.e. Better Networker, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) by delivering to the community those things that matter most, and allow time to work in your advantage, you will eventually register in the mind of your audience as an expert. Once you have the PRINCIPLE mastered, it doesn’t matter what functional tool you use to deliver the value.

The opposite is also true. If Bob would have approached on day one trying to promote his lawn care company, the relationship would not have been the same. As a matter of fact, it’s a strong possibility that you would not have ever done business with him had he tried to “prospect” you from the beginning.

Magnetic Sponsoring delivers the best chance for any of us to attract people based upon our successful mastery of delivering strong value. Nothing short of this will due.  Please share your thoughts on this article below.

Hey Larry,

You hit the nail on the head. Sometimes people have to wash away the thoughts that they had about providing value, and focus on actually providing it.

Keep up the great work.

Larry, this is one of the best articles I’ve read on what Attraction Marketing is. Your story line, BRILLIANT!!! So easy, even a caveman can do it LOL!!! Excellent breakdown to the basics of Attraction Marketing which is what Magnetic Sponsoring is all about!!!

Good stuff Larry. Now the things you were saying on the phone make perfect sense. Not once in this story did Bob promote his business or himself…even when he was supplying value and had the perfect opportunity to promote his stuff, he didn’t. I guess you could say that Bob promoted his business by not promoting his business, just being Johnny on the spot and providing value. Thanks for this.

Larry, I am not in MLM but I am in marketing and blog a lot about social media marketing. I follow your blog because you offer sage advice and as you know, I have shared some of it with my blog followers.

What you have written here is spot on, not just for MLM but also for social media marketing in general. So many people and small businesses are getting into social media and social networking because it is all the rave and then blasting out ads through these tools like they were Craig’s List and then wonder why it isn’t working for them. Not only is this method not effective, it destroys their reputation. And the disaster is amplified by the thousands of people that see this type of action.

It used to be that only strong sales and marketing could really build large networks. But now days, with all the social networking tools available, anyone using your “attraction marketing” model can build a huge network.

Thank you for this article.

This is excellent Larry. Really helps you get how attraction marketing works in real life. I know when I first got into attraction marketing I was promoting the systems, the same way people tend to promote their primary business, and wondering why I wasn’t getting anywhere. You really have to be a good neighbor first. Thanks for the great value you give to the community.

Larry thanks so much for sharing this article, it couldn’t have come at a better time than right now. I definitely see how one can use this in their business, but everyday situations as well. You are an excellent writer and a man a value yourself.

Thank You
