MLM/Network Marketing Rule #28: Credibility is essential to attracting high quality leads. Build rapport by providing sound information over time to a targeted audience.
There’s a lot of noise on the internet and most people are very skeptical about who they listen to about acquiring genuine MLM success – and for good reason. The main reason why people are highly skeptical is because most marketers “ask to get married on the first date.”
Let me explain. Picture in your mind a setting where a man notices a very attractive woman from across the room. He decides to make his way over to her, and upon meeting her FOR THE FIRST TIME he “pops the question.” Now, isn’t that just ridiculous? Who in their right mind would try that? Who in their right mind would RESPOND to that?
We can all agree that this deserves a little chuckle, but it’s the exact strategy that most amateur marketers attempt all the time. They want to “get married” the first time we connect on a blog, or meet at a networking event, etc. They go right for “buy my product,” “look at my opportunity,” “sign up for my webinar/conference call/website and they never stop to think that “we’ve just met.”
What ever happened to building a relationship first? The people that genuine MLM success in this industry are those who think long-term. They don’t “pop the question” on the first date. There are certain “unspoken” MLM success rules that you can’t afford to violate, and this is one that gets violated the most.
Trust, honesty, and unconditional love are the ingredients for success in any relationship, INCLUDING your relationship with your clients and customers. The only way to build these three qualities is over time with consistency and persistency. This is at the heart of why you need to build a marketing system that allows you to connect with your leads on a continual basis and allow the natural buying cycle of your lead to take its course.
Stop looking to “close” people and start looking to “care” for people. Mike Dillard coined the term “sellacation” – selling through education. It starts with GETTING PERMISSION to send information. Never send anything without getting permission first, period.
Periodically send low-key, educational messages to your lead and invite them to learn more, or make a transaction on the back-end, never on the front end. If you ask a woman if it is o.k. to buy her a drink, and she accepts, that’s a small step towards asking permission to see her again; but that only comes after a conversation.
If she likes what you have to say, asking to see her again is easy. Hopefully in the initial conversation, you found out some of her “likes” and you’ll produce a gift representing that knowledge on your next meeting.
Do you see where I’m going with this? Without trust you will not succeed in marketing online, no matter what you try.
“Old school” prospecting is hurting most people’s business today because it doesn’t lend to building a relationship. It’s all or nothing on the first call or email, and that’s not going to fly in today’s marketplace. I’m an advocate for building long-term relationships and statistically this is the best approach in business, especially online.

Another home run with this article, man! So much time wasted doing it that way, but once I learned about building the relationship first, it made perfect sense to me. It’s ok to plant a ton of seed, just don’t expect it to grow into crop overnight! Great article!
