The 3 “D’s” That Every Good Marketer Should Never Be Without

TWEET THIS! ===========================================>

I recently participated in a conference call with 5 other speakers in which each of us were asked, “What would be one piece of advice you would give to someone that was searching for the keys to success?” In my response, I shared a bit of wisdom that was given to me a long time ago from someone who I respect very much. My friend called these the three “D’s” to success and here they are in order.

DESIRE – most people have some measure of desire for a variety of things in their life which creates the spark to make changes, whether it’s to start a business, lose weight or go back to school to get a degree. Desire is emotional, not logical. In your gut you must feel a strong passion to achieve something or you won’t ever take the first step. Although desire is the foundation, it is the next “D” that separates those who have treated their desire like a pipe dream and those who treat it as a worthwhile ambition.

DISCIPLINEthis is the place where the masses fall off every single day of the year. Honestly, I get the most frustrated with people once I find out that they have not made the commitment to get the habits of success. Discipline is the longest part of the journey because it hurts. Think about losing weight and the thought of going to the gym and cutting out certain foods from your diet. When you stand in front of that treadmill, or look down on that plate of vegetables and low calorie servings, you start to feel that pull towards the old you, and that desire starts to wear off. It isn’t until you look past the glorious thoughts of the end results and focus on the day to day grind of working out that you will ever see success. There is an old TV show called “Fame” that I used to watch as a child. In the show’s theme song, Debbie Allen’s character makes a quote that is nestled in some eternal wisdom. She said it this way: “You’ve got big dreams, and you want fame. Well, fame costs, and right here is where you start paying – IN SWEAT.” Every discipline is a habit formed, whether it’s a good habit or bad. If you won’t discipline yourself with hard work, you can forget about ever having success.

DELIGHT – My coach and mentor Cedrick Harris says that, when he doesn’t do the daily things it takes to make his high 6-figure income, he starts to feel a bit uneasy. His body starts to actually show a “reaction” to not doing the things that he’s done over and over again, and it isn’t until he goes through with his daily disciplines that he feels “normal.” He literally delights in doing the things that it takes to succeed. Most people don’t realize that once the discipline sets in, and the habit is formed that the actual chores of the successful become quite fun. Can you imagine actually feeling joy to pick up the phone and call a lead, or put together a marketing campaign and implement it? Yes, I’m here to tell you – if you do the right things consistently, you will definitely experience a core sense of delight.

Do you see yourself dropping the ball in one of these areas? Is it in a lack of real desire? How about a weak commitment to daily disciplines? Starting today, refocus your attention on locking up the first two “D’s” and you’ll experience true delight in your heart – and in your bank account.
