If you were involved in a battle and were given the choice to do hand-to-hand combat and risk your life directly, or to launch a missile into an area from a safe distance of 1000 miles away, which one would you choose? You won’t have to ask me twice. I say, “Fire away!”
However, there may be someone with me who has been fighting with hand to hand combat their entire life and because that feels “normal” and predictable, they will elect to do that in spite of the risks.
Well, this is just about the type of exchange you can expect to have with your upline who has been a foot soldier in network marketing world battling with prospects in the old school belly to belly approach that has been around since 8-track players, rotary dial phones and black and white TV sets.
How much technology from 60 years ago can you say is still relevant today? Even cell phones, which is relatively new technology, has evolved considerably over the last 20 years. Remember the ones that were so big you had to carry them around in a suitcase? Who would get caught dead with one of those bulky things today?
So, the idea of prospecting will never go away, but it should at least evolve to include the modern approaches of using the internet. Before you try and fight this battle of lead generation with new technology, be prepared for some resistance from your upline. They will point at their wall of metals and honors from wars won on the battlefield of prospecting and may have strong resistance to the “new way of doing things.” That’s human nature. Change is uncomfortable even if that change brings about efficiency and greater profitability.
Here are the top 3 reasons why your upline may resist the idea of evolving their approach to generating leads:
1. Hiding behind technology “ignorance” – lots of people find it an easy excuse to dismiss using technology by saying they are not “tech savvy” and therefore turn their back on it. Believe it or not, using a toaster is “technology” that requires some degree of training. We all have the capacity to learn; the question is will we relax long enough to learn that using video marketing is as easy as pushing the handle on a toaster.
2. Lack of belief in its ability to work – did you know that very prominent and intelligent people wrote articles and were even quoted as saying that a computer would never have any practical use in the day to day lives of people? Well, I’d love to have someone go back and interview those people now. You know what; maybe the interviewer can send them an email to that computer sitting on their desk!
3. Fear of change – a lot of people take experiences from their past and broadcast them on the screen of their future and live in the present on what they see on that screen. They think they are moving ahead when in reality they are regressing. Anyone who is afraid of change, from the style of their hair or clothes to the types of processes necessary to stay relevant is in danger of becoming extinct. The #1 reason why dinosaurs no longer exist is because of their inability to adapt to a changing environment. Fear of change is basically the same as an inability to change; the end result is exactly the same.
