Larry Beacham Interviews Mike Dillard On The Importance Of Being Genuine

Anyone that’s even remotely serious about using the principles of attraction marketing knows the name Mike Dillard.  I had the opportunity to spend some time with Mike while at the No Excuses Summit held in Las Vegas this past weekend.

I asked Mike a couple of questions related to video marketing as well as how to utilize the social community Better Networker to build your brand.  As you can imagine, the wisdom that he shared is priceless, and I have the entire interview transcribed below.


ME: Hey, this is Larry Beacham, The Stonecold Millionaire.  I’m here on the final day of the No Excuses Summit with Mr. Mike Dillard.  As you all know, Mike is very, very successful and very, very well known for being “the Godfather of Attraction Marketing.”  I know you’ve been around to spearhead a lot of us that are in attraction marketing.  The first time that I saw one of your videos, I wondered if the personality that you have was really your personality.

MIKE: Hmm…

ME:  I’ve seen people change.

MIKE:  Right.

ME:  Now, I’ve watched you do videos, I’ve watched you on stage, and you’re the same guy whether you’re on video or not.  So how important is being authentic and genuine on video?

MIKE:  I think it’s extremely important.  Video marketing is an unbelievably powerful tool, but it’s a little bit awkward when you first try it because it’s unfamiliar for most of us.  And, I can’t tell you how nervous I was the first time I started doing video and whatever it may be, so I really…just being yourself is the easiest way to do it.  You know, coming across I could be really energetic and high frequency and just bouncing all over the place and entertaining, but that’s now who I am and eventually that gets old and that gets tiring.  So, I think just being yourself is the absolute best way to go.  I’ll be the first to admit; in a lot of my videos I’ll use an outline, or use a teleprompter that we have because it just makes it that much easier.  When you can stop focusing on what to say, you can focus more on relaxing and just being yourself.

ME:  That’s good because the first 15,000 videos that I did I was stiff or I said too much or I was trying to think too much, and I decided to do two things:  Number one was emulate.  Obviously I could pick up on the fact that that was who you really were, but then Number two I said people are going to accept me for me.  I’m not going to change just because the camera is cut on.  If I’m going to use attraction marketing in its purest sense I need to be me.  So if someone were to see me out and about with my kids and I were talking, that’s the same Larry Beacham that they see on camera talking about a tip or giving advice.  I thought that was key.

One final thing, Mike; Better Networker.  Now, I came to know that you recognized or knew my name at least from Better Networker.

MIKE:  Yep.

ME:  When I walked away from that, I was on a high obviously to know that someone like you knew me, but what I really conceptualized and thought deeply about was, you really never know who you’re impacting or who sees your content.

MIKE:  Sure.

ME:  You really never understand how you can position yourself as a true expert and leader, and who you might get a phone call from at some point.  So, help people understand what Better Networker is specifically and how it can help them to expand their expertise, who sees them, you know – what really is the value in that.

MIKEBetter Networker is a social community kind of like Facebook, but it is just for network marketers.  And, the reason that I built it is because Magnetic Sponsoring is really all of my personality and energy into it and it’s associated with me, so I wanted a platform that anyone like yourself or anybody else could go out give value to the community and use it as a soapbox to stand up and say, “Hey I have value to give; I have something to teach you; I have something that will help you guys build the business.”  In so doing, it will enable you to build a fan base, build a following and become a leader.  Today’s event, No Excuses, is a perfect example of that.  We have 800 people from around the world in a room here for 3 days, and the guys who put it on, Raymond Fong and Fernando Ceballos two years ago were just guys hanging out on Better Networker and they started putting out ridiculously good content on Search Engine Optimization, or SEO.  They were “nobodys” in the industry; they had full-time jobs working at an aerospace engineering company.  They’re in their 20′s and then they just show up to Better Networker and start recording videos teaching people really cool search engine techniques, and before they knew it they had built this little cult following on Better Networker that I noticed because their work was being seen and being talked about in the forums.  Six months later, they were speaking at one of my events, and now they’re holding their own, which is the biggest in our industry this year just 24 months later.  They quit their jobs, fired their bosses, make a multiple 6-figure income  and all from getting on Better Networker and starting to participate in the forums putting out really good content.

ME:  Yeah, you got my wheels turning on that one!  Thanks Mike for taking the time.

MIKE:  You bet, Larry.  Absolutely.

Great Stuff, the conference and Mike rocked

This is truly a great interview to archive for later use and reminder. Better yet the info. about becoming part on Better Networker and putting stuff out their about about SEO like Raymond Fong and Fernando Ceballos is a clue of what it takes to get ahead and to use that slight edge.
