I had an interesting conversation with a fellow network marketer the other day about his company’s product line which happens to be some sort of coffee product.

He was all fired up about the fact that it was a “unique” product that he felt would do well because “everybody drinks coffee.”

Well for starters, I don’t drink coffee and never have; but I get where he was coming from.  He was banking on the fact that since there is a large market for coffee, he could grow his business almost effortlessly.

However, there are a few areas that he didn’t consider that are missed when it comes to marketing “common everyday items” as a network marketing opportunity.

The average consumer drinks a “cheap” cup of coffee (Folgers), just like they eat “cheap” food (McDonald’s), wear “cheap” clothes (JC Penney’s), and drive “cheap” automobiles (Ford, Buick, etc.).  It’s all about economics and what gets you the most bang for your buck.

So ask yourself this question about your network marketing opportunity:  “Is what I’m marketing an actual asset that improves someone’s financial situation or a liability that depletes it?”

Best-Selling author Robert Kiyosaki of the “Rich Dad” series of books says that an asset is something that puts money into your pocket, while a liability takes money out.

He uses real estate as an example because the average person says that the home in which they live is an “asset,” but in reality it is a liability.

Why?  Because there is not cash flow derived from the use of it.  So, in order for that house to be truly an asset, it must be income-producing, like a rental property.

You can’t put your house in the asset column on a financial statement, no different than you can put your toaster.  It’s an asset to the bank but not you because they profit on the interest that you pay.

In this economy, everybody is holding on to their money for dear life which makes it very difficult to justify buying a $40 bottle of juice, a monthly membership for a service they can live without, or any other consumable good that the price can be “beaten” by the local discount store.

So, is your network marketing “business” an asset or a liability in the eyes of the end consumer?  You are most likely marketing a liability if:

1. The product or service cannot appreciate in value over time by simply holding on to it
2. The product or service cannot be resold on the open market for a greater amount than it was purchased for (i.e. the “used car” effect)
3. The product or service cannot be listed in the asset column on a financial statement (i.e. stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate, commodities)
